The Turner Twins tested the traditional clothing and equipment used by mountaineers 100 years ago by climbing Mt Elbrus 5,642m (18,510ft).
Comparing the traditional clothing and kit which Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine and George Mallory wore on their climb of Everest in 1924, against today’s modern mountaineering equivalent. The twins started from the more remote north side, traversing the higher west peak (5,642 m/ 18,510 ft), eventually reaching the small settlement of Terskol to the south. King’s College London’s, Department of Twin Research (TwinsUK) and GlaxoSmithKline’s, Human Performance Lab conducted research to understand the effects of high altitude on the human body and the performance of different clothing systems.
